GEIGER · BLOCK 9

THE JOB

  1. 01

Sign for your identity card in the lobby, then collect a dosimeter, a flashlight with a dead battery, a sponge and a field pack. A short drill walks the new ones through it and switches itself off once you have gone up.

  2. 02

    LISTEN

The dosimeter clicks faster as radiation rises. Every live source on the floor adds to the reading, and walls, shut doors and heavy furniture weaken what passes through them. Work out which room, then which corner, then which object.

  3. 03

    PROBE

Hold the probe to narrow the meter to a tight cone in front of you and sweep a shelf, a table or a pile of rubbish until the reading screams. Some sources are buried in the litter or shut in a cupboard, and read faint until you disturb them.

  4. 04

    CONTAIN

Carry the item or pack it, then throw it into the green-lit lead drum in the corridor. Every contained source pays. Scrub the hazard spills too, and the elevator takes you further up the block.

  5. 05

    SALVAGE

Anything loose and clean sells into the corridor crate, by hand or a packful at a time. The money is real, but every second spent scavenging is another second of exposure, and a contaminated piece in your pack keeps dosing you from between your shoulders.

  6. 06

    SURVIVE

Your dose carries from floor to floor. Iodine pills from the vending machine bring it back down, dearer with every pack. At 100% the run is over, and your exposure report says what did it.
